Position Overview

The Senior Internal Auditor is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, operational processes, risk management practices, and compliance with company policies and applicable regulations. This position conducts risk-based internal audits, identifies opportunities to strengthen controls and improve business performance, and provides practical recommendations to management.

Reporting to the Director of Internal Audit, the Senior Internal Auditor is responsible for independently executing assigned audit engagements, including planning, risk assessment, fieldwork, testing, documentation, and reporting, in accordance with established internal audit methodologies and professional standards. The role requires strong analytical skills, sound professional judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to build effective working relationships across the organization while maintaining independence and objectivity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute assigned financial, operational, compliance, and internal control audits under the direction of the Director of Internal Audit, in accordance with established audit methodologies and professional standards.
  • Perform engagement-level risk assessments to identify key business risks, evaluate existing controls, and develop audit procedures aligned with identified risks.
  • Evaluate business processes, transactions, financial records, and supporting documentation to assess accuracy, efficiency, compliance, and control effectiveness.
  • Develop audit programs and testing procedures, establish testing criteria, analyze supporting evidence, and identify control deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Conduct interviews, walkthroughs, and other information-gathering activities to understand business processes, identify risks, and evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive audit workpapers that document procedures performed, evidence obtained, findings identified, and conclusions reached.
  • Independently manage assigned audit activities from planning through reporting, ensuring audit objectives are achieved, work is completed within established timelines, and results are appropriately supported.
  • Discuss preliminary audit findings with management to validate observations, identify root causes, assess associated risks, and obtain management responses.
  • Develop practical, risk-based recommendations to strengthen internal controls, improve operational efficiency, and reduce business risk.
  • Prepare audit reports and presentations that clearly communicate findings, associated risks, root causes, and recommendations to management. Support the Director of Internal Audit in communicating significant audit matters to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.
  • Perform follow-up procedures to evaluate management’s progress in implementing corrective actions and determine whether identified risks have been appropriately addressed.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with business leaders and process owners while maintaining professional independence and objectivity.
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal audit processes, methodologies, and overall departmental effectiveness.
  • Assist with special projects, investigations, and other risk assessment activities as directed by the Director of Internal Audit.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management, internal controls, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting financial, operational, compliance, or internal control audits.
  • Strong understanding of internal auditing principles, risk-based auditing methodologies, internal controls, and business processes.
  • Ability to independently plan and execute assigned audit procedures, evaluate supporting evidence, and develop well-supported conclusions.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks, evaluate control deficiencies, and recommend practical improvements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document audit findings and effectively communicate results and recommendations to management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or progress toward certification.
