Position Overview
Manages the development of innovative and responsible agronomic/horticultural programs. Designs, develops and implements branch technical programs and strategies to build service management acumen (field leadership, agronomics and employee health & safety). Facilitates corporate strategic planning for technical training and support initiatives. Liaises with key national trade organizations and provides leadership to region technical staff in stakeholder interactions. Lends technical expertise to internal groups in support of statutory compliance, commercial and national account development and agronomic and operational campaign deployment.


1. Ensures the strategic development of service management standards. Directs the development of procedures and metrics for training service managers to standards. Collaborates with peers to devise strategic plans and implement programs requiring technical support.
2. Develops strategies and position papers as required to maintain the company’s leadership position among industry stakeholders in matters of state, public and regulatory affairs.
3. Develops technical strategies to support governmental affairs initiatives by developing and reviewing technical content for use in communications with state legislators and regulatory offices. Ensures compliance with state regulatory requirements.
4. Leads corporate technical support initiatives (e.g., marketing campaigns, agronomic operational activities) on key projects requiring subject matter expertise for success.
5. Provides agronomic and horticultural subject matter expertise to support sales to prospective key strategic partners and growth of commercial accounts. Acts as a subject matter expert (SME) to align customer needs for landscape services with branch capabilities.
6. Develops agronomic programs and strategies for sales of services to governmental agencies and national corporate accounts (e.g., hospitalities, REITs). Coordinates the development of agronomic and horticultural programs among region technical staff to fulfill bid proposal and contractual obligations.
7. Leverages the efficiencies of current handheld computer systems and assesses and recommends new software to accurately track work duties for improved customer communication, labor utilization and chemical use.
8. Manages regional technical staff and develops goals and strategies to address subject matter expertise required to train associates in the performance of assigned duties (e.g., working knowledge of agronomic and horticulture needed to sell and deliver effective programs that serve customers responsibly).
9. Partners with field leadership and other internal groups in the development and implementation of AdvantEDGE, the technical program content software.

Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in agronomy, horticulture, soil sciences or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
• 7-10 years of agronomic technical experience applied to branch-based service operations are required. Experience developing product use specifications and transferring product and agronomic knowledge to support marketing, sales and service operations required.
• Leadership and supervisory management skills and/or experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Advanced technical knowledge of agronomy, horticulture, soil sciences, etc.
• Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations governing chemicals for consumer applications (e.g., herbicides, fungicides, pesticides)
• Process management skills to develop, implement and support new process and initiatives
• Supervisory management skills to delegate, develop, coach, and manage the performance of others
• Training and development knowledge and skills to develop, design and deliver technical knowledge and expertise to audiences of varying skill levels
• Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
• Verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as, chemical concentrations, environmental risk assessments, percentages, area and volume
• Research and problem solving skills to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Computer skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
